Aiming to shed a few pounds post summer holiday season? We have some news that might boost your mood.
According to a study by Washington State University, drinking wine can actually aid weight loss. Provided you stick to a maximum of two glasses and drink it in the evening, that is.
The logic goes like this: wine contains resveratrol, a type of polyphenol that turns "white fat" into "beige fat", making it easier to burn off. "Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression, which enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won't be overloaded," explains the researcher Professor Min Du. "They convert white fat into beige fat that burns lipids off as heat – helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction."
However, there is one catch. (We will leave it to you to decide whether to ignore it or take this additional titbit on board.) While wine does contain polyphenols, you'd be better off getting your hit from fruit. "Many of the beneficial polyphenols are insoluble and get filtered out during the wine production process," Du continued.
Glass of red – anyone?
